How to choose a private investigator in Australia
Compare relevant licensing, the proposed methods, written scope, complete price and reporting. Choose a provider who can explain what the work may establish and what remains uncertain.

Before you proceed
- Verify the business identity and relevant licence details.
- Compare the same scope and total GST-inclusive cost.
- Confirm deliverables, communication and cancellation terms.
- Keep a copy of the accepted scope.
Start with your question and location
Give each provider the same short outline, general location and timing so their proposals can be compared fairly. You do not need to disclose extensive third-party material to obtain an initial assessment. Explain whether a lawyer or another authorised person needs the output. National coverage should come with a practical explanation of availability and travel, not an assumption that an investigator is immediately nearby.
How do you check relevant licensing?
Ask for the legal business name, relevant licence details and the person or business responsible for the proposed work. Check the current official licensing information for the jurisdiction and activity. Different states and territories use different categories and arrangements. Our Australian rules reference links to official starting points. A business listing, association logo or qualification should not be treated as a substitute for checking the relevant authority.
Compare the complete quote
Check included investigator time, preparation, travel, record costs, reporting, GST and the approval process for extras. A low hourly rate does not establish a low total. Compare the question and deliverables in each proposal, not just the headline price. Ask how rescheduling, cancellation and unused time are handled under the agreed terms and applicable rights.
Ask how uncertainty will be reported
A useful provider can describe circumstances in which a result may be inconclusive. Ask how possible identity matches are distinguished from supported findings and what happens if a subject is not observed. Guaranteed discoveries or promises of access to every private record are not a sound basis for commissioning work. The proposed method should be understandable without disclosing sensitive operational details.
Check communication and information handling
Tell the provider how and when it is safe to contact you. Ask where detailed briefs and documents are submitted, who can access them, how you receive progress updates and who is authorised to receive the report. Avoid sending the same sensitive files to multiple providers during quote comparison. Keep the initial enquiry short and supply necessary detail through the agreed private process.
What should your final choice be based on?
Choose a feasible, proportionate proposal you understand and can afford, with clear responsibility for the work and reporting. PartnerCheck is operated by Everguard Group and is licensed to provide investigation services across Australia. We assess suitability, invite the necessary private brief and confirm scope and price before payment. You can ask questions about the proposed engagement before deciding whether to proceed.
