What can a private investigator do in Australia?
A private investigator can undertake suitable, authorised factual enquiries within the applicable rules and agreed scope. Licensing does not provide unrestricted access to private accounts or guarantee that information can be obtained.

Before you proceed
- Describe your purpose and authority clearly.
- Ask which methods and sources are in scope.
- Do not send passwords or unnecessary sensitive information.
- Raise any relevant court order, restriction or proceeding.
What services can a scoped enquiry involve?
PartnerCheck assesses relationship and infidelity enquiries, surveillance, dating and background reviews, social media research, business checks and legitimate tracing requests. The method depends on your purpose, the identifiers available and what can reasonably be examined. Some questions suit desktop work. Others need observation or further factual enquiries. We explain the proposed work and its limits before asking you to proceed.
Can an investigator find information beyond an ordinary web search?
Professional research can bring together relevant public records, permitted information sources, careful comparison and scoped field enquiries. Its value includes assessing identity, dates, context and inconsistencies rather than simply returning a list of search results. A professional tool or information source still has access and use conditions. It does not make every record available or remove the need for a suitable purpose.
Can an investigator access private messages or accounts?
PartnerCheck does not bypass account privacy, obtain passwords, impersonate users or offer access to private messages. Do not provide someone else’s credentials or ask for work that depends on unauthorised access. If you already hold material relevant to the enquiry, explain how it was obtained. We assess whether it can appropriately form part of the brief before requesting unnecessary copies.
Does a licence settle every legal question?
No. The relevant location, activity and circumstances matter. Licensing and permission for a particular act are different questions. For example, Queensland identifies private investigation within Class 1 security provider licensing, while NSW uses Class 2E private investigator licensing. Victoria’s regulator publishes its own activity and licensing guidance. Refer to current official sources and discuss any specific legal issue with your solicitor.
Is debtor tracing the same as debt recovery or process serving?
No. The desktop tracing scope researches potential location leads for a legitimate purpose. It does not collect a debt, serve documents or guarantee an address is current. Explain any proceeding or deadline so the reporting can be coordinated with your authorised solicitor or process server. Further attendance or another service needs its own assessment and agreed scope.
What requests will not be accepted?
PartnerCheck does not accept instructions intended to enable stalking, harassment, intimidation, unlawful access or the evasion of contact restrictions. A request may also be unsuitable because the purpose is unclear, the information is insufficient or the proposed work would not answer the question. A suitability assessment protects the quality and purpose of the work as well as the people involved.
